Dehydrating Breathers
Dehydrating breathers are employed to remove existing humidity in the air that is absorbed by the equipment to which they are connected.
In power transformers, they are coupled to the expansion tank’s air-intake pipes and are usually installed close to ground-level to help viewing the special silica-gel’s degree of saturation, which changes color when saturated with humidity, making it easy to spot the exact moment when it should be replaced or regenerated.
External air only contacts the silica when it is actually sucked into the transformer. Aside from this situation, the silica is completely insulated from the external environment by a layer of oil contained in the breather’s body itself, located in its lowermost portion.
